Katrina Madeline Locke
LOCKE- Katrina Madeline Locke, 88, died in her sleep on Sunday July
31, 2005 at the Grand Manan Hospital. She was born in Castalia on
October 11, 1916 at the home of her parents Ashton Wellington and Ida
(Mason) Locke. She is survived by one sister Marion Reppert of
Castalia, NB, and three brothers Brenton (Nora) of Grand Harbour, NB,
Frank (Marshall) and Ray both of Castalia, NB, also many nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by one sister Helen, and two brothers
John and Edison.
In 1938 she graduated from the nursing program at the Talithi Cumi Hospital in Boston. Returning to New Brunswick she enjoyed a long career of public and private nursing care in Saint John and Grand Manan. She served at both the King St. East and the Charlotte St. Nursing Homes in Saint John. Later she worked for a time at the old Grand Manan Hospital and with Doctors Bryant, Thompson, Mackenzie and Ritchie until retirement.
An abiding joy, discovered in midlife, was her interest in painting, which she studied under Ester Oberg and Lester Stevens N.A.D.. Her work of Island Scenes and still-life is preserved in numerous private collections, and one of her works has recently been donated as the first recent painting in the collection of the Grand Manan Art Gallery.
She was intimately involved in the life of the Zion Full Gospel Mission, Castalia, as a member and lay minister until its congregation dissolved in 1992. She was influential in the decision made by the congregation to donate the building to the Grand Manan Historical Society for use as an Art Gallery.
Friends and acquaintances are welcome to pay their respects on Thursday August 4th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Ells Funeral Home, Grand Harbour, NB. By kind indulgence of the Directors of the Grand Manan Historical Society, the funeral will take place in the Grand Manan Art Gallery at 21 Cedar St. on Friday, August 5th, 2005 at 2 PM with the interment to follow in the family plot at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family has requested that donations may be made to the Grand Manan Art Gallery the Grand Manan Historical Society, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
