Douglas Sinclair Mackenzie
1950-2020
Peacefully, in the Grand Manan Hospital, with his family by his side, Doug Sinclair Mackenzie passed away on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, after a long period of illness. He is survived by his partner, Marilyn Zwicker, his daughters, Callie and Colleen, sisters Sue, Paddy, and Linda, aunt Fran, and grandchildren Che, Evo and Colton.
Doug was born on January 20th, 1950, in Montreal, QC, the first child and only son of Donald and Elizabeth Mackenzie of Westmount, Montreal. He spent the summers of his childhood on Grand Manan, at the Ledges and around North Head. He loved the island and, after a summer on a pig farm in England, a degree in English and Journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa, a spell in a nickel mine in the Prairies, and some other jobs and adventures involving turkey vultures, VW vans, and Woodstock, Doug returned to the island to live. He continued to travel, though, from Alaska to the Galapagos, and many trips to Brooklyn and New York City, a place he adored.
Over the years, Doug enjoyed skiing, fly fishing, and golfing. He loved watching sports, placing bets, and correcting people who thought it was ‘soccer,’ when Doug knew it was actually football. He could often be found rocking out to music in his vehicle and would explain to you a book he had just read about the musician, and how he had seen their legendary performance in the ‘60s.
Doug was able to spend his final months at home (The Ledges), cared for by Marilyn, visited by his daughters and friends, surrounded by his books, music, and art, on the island he called home. His family would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and show appreciation for the efforts, care, and support of the many medical professionals who gave of their time and expertise over the years, and to thank the staff of the Grand Manan Hospital, and the work and concern of Dr. Heir in particular.
Arrangements are in care of Ells Funeral Home Inc., 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2. Condolences, messages of sympathy may be sent to www.ells.ca or (506)662-3116.
